List of Companion Plants for Vegetable Gardens

Companion plants are suitable plants to grow along with other types of plants. Here, the plants will support each other by repelling the pest or by providing nourishment to the other. The association may not be mutual, but if at least one plant benefits from the other, they are called companions.

Here are 6 such companion plants that can help other plants to grow safer and healthier. 

Basil

Basil can improve the growth and flavor of tomatoes. 

  • Plant basil in between the tomato plants to repel the pest thrips. It also repels many flies and mosquitoes.
  • Basil plant also benefits plants like pepper, petunias, and oregano.

Coriander

The leaves of the coriander plant are a common herb. It can repel many harmful insects like aphids, potato beetles, and spider mites. 

  • Plant coriander between the crops like carrots or cabbage to repel the common pest of these plants.
  • Alternatively, you can make coriander tea to use as a pest control spray.

Cucumber

Cucumbers are not just great-tasting salad ingredients but can also be a companion plant to corn and beans. 

  • This plant has the same requirements of warmth, moisture, and soil type, so there is no contradiction.
  • It can also grow well with beets, carrots, peas, and radishes.
  • But be aware, cucumbers cannot be near tomato plants.

Garlic

This plant is not only repellent to us humans but also to many pests. This is most beneficial when planted near roses, where it can repel the aphids. 

  • It is also beneficial for apples, pears, cucumbers, lettuce, peas, and celery.
  • Garlic plant accumulates more sulfur, which is a natural fungicide, and prevent many fungal diseases from these plants.
  • Make a natural spray made with garlic and water that will also benefit the soil in repelling many moths as well. It can also repel many animals like deer.
  • The garlic spray can kill whiteflies, fungus, and aphids. This spray is one of the rare sprays that are suitable for orchids.

Lavender

The lavender plant has its benefits in repelling fleas and moths, too. The aromatic flower of this plant attracts many nectar-feeding insects that are beneficial. 

  • It also protects the other plants from whiteflies and codling moths. It is more beneficial for fruit trees.
  • Even the dried plant parts are useful in repelling insects and pests. Plant lavender during winter. It grows easily from cuttings.

Lettuce

Lettuce can support many other vegetable plants to grow healthier. 

  • It is beneficial for broccoli, beets, beans, carrots, onions, pole beans, cucumbers, radish, and strawberries.
  • It can be grown along with cauliflower under its shade.
  • The best pair it makes is with dill.
  • It is supportive of cauliflower but not of cabbage. Cabbage can mask the taste of lettuce.
