How to Grow Basil from Seeds Indoors

Are you wondering how to grow basil from seeds indoors? You have come to the right place! Basil can be grown from seeds as well as from the stems. The best way to grow basil indoors is from the seeds. There are a few rules you need to follow while choosing this method.

How to Germinate Basil Seeds?

Growing basil indoors from seeds is done 6 weeks before the last frost. Basil needs warm weather, and if you start at this point, the seeds will germinate and produce seedlings by the time spring arrives. Plant the seeds in plastic containers ready with potting mix and dampen the soil for the seeds. Cover the containers with plastic wrap and sprinkle water when needed. Germination will happen within a few days when kept in a warm place with a good amount of sunlight.

Caring for Basil Seedlings

When the germinated seed grows to a few inches high, there will be initial leaves that resemble those of the mature plant. When the seedlings attain a few more inches, it is better to transplant them to individual containers. The seedlings need water twice a week. Try to have a wick system so that the watering is from the bottom to the top.

How Much Light Does Basil Need?

Basil plants need warm weather and about 6 hours of light a day on average. For the younger growth stage, the light requirement is 12-16 hours at best. Give them natural light and get an artificial source for the dark hours outside. If there is not enough light from the sun, you should provide an artificial source for the same. A CFL bulb should be fine for this indoor basil plant. The light source should be 3-4 inches above the seedlings. If the light can have a timer, the best.

Air Movements

Air movements can make the plants stronger. If the plants get enough circulated air from outside, it is fine; otherwise, keep the indoor basil plants near a fan, and have mild air circulating them. The plants must have some movement, not strong wind. The air circulation will remove extra moisture from the seedlings and will make the stems thicker. Simply brushing the plants would also have the same effect.

How to Prune Basil Plants?

Pruning is most important for basil plants. Cut down the top when the plant attains 3 sets of leaves. When the 2 younger ones are also strong enough, cut down the top set. This will allow the new shoots to grow. Repeat the same process several times, whenever the 3 sets of leaves of each branch mature. This will make the plant grow bushy and yield more. The pruned leaves can be readily used in salads and other dishes.

How To Harvest Basil Leaves?

Harvesting can be done when the basil plant has at least 6 sets of leaves. While harvesting, cut the stem part and not just the leaves. This will allow many new shoots and make the plant bushier as it grows. When you need a larger portion, select a tall stem and leave at least 2 leaves, and cut the top portion off. The excess leaves harvested can be stored wrapped in a damp towel and inside tight boxes.
